This weeks reading is supplied by Luke Bale of Gamespotting Blog fame and is...

Abstract: This paper proposes a close "reading" of the computer game Resident Evil-Code Veronica X, in a practical attempt to argue for the application of reader response criticism to digital media.

This is a text that Luke will be using for his essay and wishes to discuss its content with the groups. It will also give us an opertunity to discuss methods of close reading.

  1. This close textual reading is a great excesise in investigative research. I'm not a massive fan of reader response approaches but it is a good outline to the methodology and i think it shows both the usefulness and failings of this approach which as the text states is firmly from the fields of lierary theory.

I think it has a nice break-down into the areas of usability, learning curve, repertoire and model reader which are some areas that we didn't cover last term... i have a bit of a problem with the notion of the "model reader" as it is somewhat different from concepts such as target demographics.

Who would the "Model Reader" (or model player) for this game be?
