The Starving Video Game Artist

Check out this interview with Jason Rohrer on IGN. Really interesting for those on both sides of the debate regarding art vs product, game artists and the economic decline, freeware vs platform games, and his games in general.

  1. Well... it looks like the artists no longer live in garrets is Paris but in mouldy houses in San Fran.

It answers a few questions on Rohrer’s status that where raised in the session.

I think that Rohrer’s turn from "Art Game" to "Product Game" isn’t such a big turn. I think that primrose is a great investigation into what he calls "Deep Play" but following his career it has shown a turn more towards the notion of Play and Fun and a shift away from "Art Games". I still get a sense of wonder (nudge-nudge wink-wink) from Rohrer’s games, even primrose, I think that as a product it is amazingly considered and designed and as a system (or piece of art) that investigates play it looks to new areas and dynamics to engage the user.

(I am a little hooked on it though)

I think that his considerations of the possibilities of the i-phone when developing it was really interesting to read. I didn't really know about them (as I’m only playing on a touch) but I think that it has a great design methodology laying behind it and I think that this really shines through.
